Fantasy writers wanted

I can't remember where I saw it--it was on one of the publishing reports, yesterday, I think--but I read that agents and publishers are looking for the next Harry Potter/J.K. Rowling. If you're a fantasy writer for adults and children, this may be your time.

I was thinking of my former student Lacy, who now lives in Colorado. Lacy....Lacy....you out there? How's that novel coming, the one that we loved so much?

Did anyone else see that write up? Where was it?

Who? Where? Tell them I'm on my way! LOL

I'm about 13,000 words into a rewrite on that novel. I got stuck on the plot and had to go back and do a pretty monumental change of plan to get around it, but I'm still plugging along.

The next JKR... Don't I wish! Have you read the last book yet?

Well, I don't think it much matters, actually, where I saw it. Just that agents and editors, in general, are very very interested in fantasy material. But I *think* I saw it in either PublishersLunch.com or on Media Bistro. You could probably find it by Googling.....

"..agents and publishers are looking for the next Harry Potter/J.K. Rowling."

I've heard that HarperCollins (and a herd of foreign publishers) are betting on Sarah Prineas' The Magic Thief series.

4/5 of the agents I have met in person have asked for my chapters (fantasy), so I would say this is so, so true. Just don't pitch yourself as the next JKR. I adore her and aspire to be her bestest friend ever, but don't pitch your work as the next HP, because the slush pile has been full of queries attempting to appeal to that audience for several years.

Anywho...Barbara, I have a suggestion for a guest on your show: Heather Sellers. I met her this weekend at Midwest Writers Workshop and I think she literally saved me. Here is her site. I think you would love her.

Again, I have to give props to JKR. Her book opened the market so much for so many of us. I can only hope we get our chances to utilize this wonder before the market shifts and the door slams.
