Do you eat alone and read?

Brian is off to a gig and Travis is with a friend, so I made dinner for one.

Dinner was:

Basmati rice
One sheet of nori seaweed, toasted
Edamame
Green salad with Aunt Teresa's house dressing (wine, olive oil, spices)
Zucchini broiled with grated parmesan and butter
A glass of Estancia chardonnay

Divine!

This is a meal that Brian would like. Travis would like the nori and rice. I loved it all.

And I read, fittingly, Alone in the Kitchen with an Eggplant: Confessions of Cooking for One and Dining Alone by Jenni Ferrari-Adler, who is going to be on my show next week. I love the essays in this anthology, and I loved my meal.

For dessert, mini peanut butter cups from Trader Joe's.

What was the last meal you ate alone and did you read? If so, what was it?

I usually eat lunch alone with a book. Most days in the courtyard of the Santa Monica Library, although after the last meal that I ordered from the cafe there, given it descending to even lower depths than they have in the past, I think that on days when I've forgotten my lunch I'll just walk the extra few blocks to eat somewhere on the promenade.

You're not eating alone if you're eating with a book :)

Yesterday for lunch I ate a fresh salad of romaine, garden tomatoes and cucumbers, blue cheese crumbles and bacon bits, topped with red wine vinagrette (which I sopped up with the heel from a loaf of crusty French bread). Joining me were the characters from "Keeping the House," a new novel by Ellen Baker.

A good time was had by all...

Yesterday afternoon I ate a bowl of white grapes (not really a meal) while reading a Dean Koontz book. I don't know how far I'll get in this book - scary doesn't work well for me, but it was a hot summer day, the livingroom was cool, and the chair so comfy. I might do it again today.

a slice of pizza and 2 large diet cokes, with Sebastian Faulks' ENGLEBY... in the greenhouse seating area (in the rain) at my favorite pizzeria. Lunch du jour.
